Kenneth DeWaard, born in 1962, has been painting en plein air for over 30 years. He began his career studying watercolor under Irving Shapiro at the American Academy of Art in Chicago and then continued his early training at the acclaimed Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Art with Scott Burdick and Daniel Gerhartz.

He has won numerous awards around the country at various plein air events such as Easton, Door County, Laguna Beach, Callaway Gardens, Sonoma, Richmond, Cape Ann, and Florida, just to name a few. He began teaching in the late 1990s and has continued to give workshops around the country as well as instructing at The Academy of Fine Art in Denmark, WI.

For Ken, there is nothing more rewarding and challenging than painting under an open sky, surrounded by the scents and sounds of nature, along with its ever-changing color and harmonies to excite one’s creativity. He says, “To be able to share that experience I feel when painting and pass that along to the viewer through my work is always very gratifying to me.”

After spending the last 14 years in the Driftless area of Wisconsin, Ken has recently moved to Maine. After much thought and consideration, he and his wife, along with their four young children, decided on Hope, ME. A neighboring town to Camden, Hope is located in mid-coast Maine “Where the Mountains Meet the Sea.” The area is absolutely gorgeous and full of inspiration, with so much to paint!
