Kathleen Robbins has a master’s degree from Massachusetts College of Art and lives in the seacoast area of New Hampshire. Her love of plein air painting feeds the studio work that ultimately develops into her finished pieces. Part of the process involves memory of the place and letting the image develop as layers are built up, which allows the painting to become a real and imagined representation of the landscape.

ARTIST STATEMENT

“Most of these paintings were created in the seacoast area of New Hampshire, Essex County in Massachusetts, and most recently Cape Elizabeth, Maine. What develop in these landscapes are relationships between one form and another: a weather-torn scrub bush dwarfed by an elegant tree line, a stand of tall oaks with the weight and pressure of a heavy sky, a piece of light that illuminates a thick, dark mass of tree lines. These single events are what drive the creative process to a deeper place. It becomes the springboard for the process of invention to take place. It is the initial response to a place that dictates the image building process to begin. As the painting develops, the process of layering and drawing, adding and subtracting, ultimately creates the final piece.”
